  1. Early years

    José Miguel Cabrera Torres was born on April 18th, 1983 in a city in Venezuela called Maracay. Little did everyone know he was destined to walk comfortably among the greatest sportsmen in history. In Maracay he discovered that a simple baseball would start out as fun and games and turn out to be his lifelong passion. His proficiency appeared quickly enough and the scouts from the US lined up to meet him and watch young Miguel at work. It was something people had to see to believe.

  2. 1997 - 1999

    1997

    His relentless work and continuous discipline lead him to be a part of the team that would represent Venezuela in the 1997 Pan-American games, in St. Louis, MO. It came as no surprise that Miguel ended up as homerun batting champion, shortstop and many other awards. America gave him joy, inspiration and courage to continue his career without taking his eyes off the prize; it’s how the World Series title received by the Florida Marlins is embedded in his mind as the major goal.

    1999

    Florida Marlins sign him up him as a free agent to start his career in the United States. A short while later, with a bunch of achievements behind him, he finally made it as an MLB player with the Southern team.

  3. 2002 - 2004

    2002

    Between innings, he decides to tie the knot with Rosangel Polanco, his childhood sweetheart. On June 2002, he is part of two key points in his life: his wedding and his ascent to Major League Baseball, the latter of which Rosangel told Cabrera’s mom. On that same year, Cabrera would hit his first homerun in the majors. The first of many, without a doubt.

    2003

    During this year Miguel Cabrera finally made his debut as a MLB player for the Florida Marlins, winning the world series ring and sharing multiple achievements until 2007 when he signed for the Detroit Tigers.

    2004

    Cabrera marks off his list one of the greatest dreams he had since childhood: he is chosen as one of the players for the All-Star Game.

    Having left the Marlins the previous year, he finally starts in 2008 as a player for the Detroit Tigers, with a new set of goals and achievements in his sights and with a new team to support him. The Tiger family helped him conquer one of his most valued dreams: The Triple Crown.

    His passion and determination click together perfectly to make him Batting Champion in the American League of Major League Baseball, with an average of .344.

    2012

    After his performance in games as unpredictable as they were unforgettable, Miguel Cabrera received the greatest awards given by the American League: the Hank Aaron Award, Luis Aparicio Award, and many other distinctions given through the votes of the players themselves, but none have matched the paramount milestone of this career: the Triple Crown. At the time, this made Cabrera the first Venezuelan and first Latin-American player to receive this award, carrying his expectation and those of his followers to the absolute zenith.

    Cabrera receives more and more awards, showing that a winner doesn’t stop at his first achievement. He has been the first right-handed batter to receive the Batting Leader prize for three years in a row, and his achievements surpass the wildest dreams of fans and experts. Not since the ‘70s, when Rod Carew received the Hank Aaron Award and Player of the Year of Major League Baseball for four consecutive seasons has someone equaled that feat. He has also received the Luis Aparicio Award for the fourth time. He has been the first player of the Detroit Tigers to hit back-to-back seasons with at least 40 home runs since Cecil Fielder did in 1990 and 1991.

    He signs with the Detroit Tigers for 10 years and is chosen as the starting first baseman by popular vote for the All-Star Game for the eighth time.

    On May 16th, the world witnesses his 400th home run, becoming the Venezuelan with the highest number of HRs in baseball. The countless achievements and goals of Miguel Cabrera, who started out as just another kid in Maracay, who dreamed of being among the greatest. His fame is only surpassed by his humbleness, perseverance and determination, which serves as a permanent source of inspiration for the newer generations.

    Unfortunately, the Detroit Tigers and Miguel Cabrera didn't make it through to the postseason or the World Series. Te Venezuelan ends the season with many lessons learned during 2016, and very eager to start next season. "What am I going to do now? I’d rather not make too many plans, because I want to stay active and make it to the post season", he said. For the rest of the year, he plans to be close to his family and focus on the ankle recovery he has been dragging through the year.
